What Is It?

Sátira means “Satire” in Spanish. It is a personal project that I have been working on for the past couple of months. Inspired by recent events in Ecuador, I was compelled to publish them. They’re meant to be spoofs off famous brands and recent events.

What was the Problem?

The problem lies in Ecuador, or more precisely, the current state of affairs within the country paints a grim picture. Ecuador has witnessed a significant downturn in its development and public well-being. After years of improvement in the late 2000s and early 2010s, the nation now grapples with escalating poverty and inequality. The security landscape is deteriorating rapidly, with cartels tightening their grip and holding the country hostage.

Ecuador’s homicide rate tells a harrowing tale, soaring from 5.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2017—one of the lowest rates in the Western hemisphere—to a staggering 25.5 in 2022. Today, two Ecuadorian cities bear the unfortunate title of the deadliest in the world. Adding to the distressing scenario is the alarming surge in prison violence. Eleven large-scale gang-related massacres within the country’s penitentiary system have resulted in the brutal murder of 416 inmates since February 2021, sending shockwaves through Ecuador and the region.

As a first-generation American of Ecuadorian descent, witnessing the current state of the country fills me with profound sadness.

How did I Solve It?

I can’t pretend that I can solve it. That would be arrogant. This is merely an expression of how I feel about the state of the country. Hopefully the people looking at it can and will understand how bad things are at the moment.
